GRB (Gender Responsive Budgeting) MARKET 5
The story of Ana, a merchant in Timor-Leste who faces many challenges, and the role of UN Women in achieving gender equality
The story depicts the daily life of Ana, a female trader in Timor Leste who must endure a strenuous journey every day while caring for her young sibling. At the crowded and dirty market, Ana faces significant challenges from damaged roads, lack of public facilities, poor sanitation, and security threats. These are realities experienced by nearly 75-85% of female traders in Timor Leste.
The story explores Ana’s resilience in confronting these unfavorable conditions, including transportation and sanitation limitations, which force Ana and her children to sleep at the market if she fails to sell her goods. This animation focuses on the urgent need for safe and accessible trading spaces and highlights the steps taken by the Timor Leste government to address gender inequality through the Gender Responsive Budgeting (GRB) Framework.
Supported by UN Women and various civil society organizations, the story illustrates efforts to integrate gender perspectives into government policies and budgets, and how budget analysis and advocacy can help improve the lives of female traders like Ana. By highlighting Ana’s struggles and the solutions being pursued to address inequality, the animation conveys a message about the importance of gender equality and infrastructure improvements to achieve more equitable outcomes for all.
